GPO WorkGroup Templates issues: thumbnail images and sort order?
I have successfully managed to get our Office 2013 installs across the domain to display the workgroup templates, but upon launching the Office 2013 applications they do not have a thumbnail picture of the document itself, nor do they have a preview image if that is possible. Please note this only affects our custom templates, all of the Microsoft templates look normal.
Additionally the custom templates do not sort themselves into any logical sort order. Successive restarts of the Office 2013 applications result in the templates appearing in different order.
Does anyone know what I need to do to fix these two issues?

MS Office 2013: "File in use. File.xlsx is locked for editing" error on random files
Hi All,
I'm having a bit of a head scratcher with certain files. Whenever they are opened they flash up an error saying "File in use. File has been locked for editing by "unknown user". No one is intentionally locking the files, and whenever a new copy of the read only file is saved, that becomes read only the next time it's opened. This is happening with both word and excel, and seems to occur at random from different users and computers on the network.
Thanks for any help,
Matt

Making DOTM Dynamic
Hi everybody,
I have the following problem:
Our CMS uses DOCX files as templates, containig variables and Text. These templates also contain the letterhead information and layout.
Since the letterhead tends to change from time to time, we would like to merge layout and content every time, a template is used. Thus, the letterhead and layout could be changed in one file and hundreds of template files would use the new layout immediately.
Is there a function in Word providing this procedure?
Thanks for your time

Getting People column attributes for a content search display template
Hello,
I have a custom list that I am using to create a contacts list. It has a people picker column and then a single line text column. In my first solution, I was able to use a rest call to get the attributes I need for the person (Name, job title, department and email) from the people picker field. All works well in my JS/HTML solution. REST call below:
/_api/web/lists/getbytitle('Key Contacts')/items?$select=*&$select=Person/Title,Person/JobTitle,Person/EMail,Person/Department&$expand=Person/ID
However! I would like to use a content search web part and a display template instead but I'm unclear as to how I can use managed properties to extract the necessary data from the People picker column. In my current Search Schema I can see crawled properties like People:SPS-JobTitle, People:SPS-Department and right now People:SPS-JobTitle is mapped to the JobTitle managed property. This property is searchable, queryable, retrievable and refinable. But if i drop JobTitle into the managed property settings of my content search web part, nothing happens. So in summary, I'm trying to figure out how to use a content search web part to display information like picture, name, job title, etc, from a people picker field.
Event ID 4768 failure using exchanged hosted solution
Hi,
I am having a lot of failed 4768 audits in my server event logs. The problem seems to stem from Outlook 2013 interacting with the domain.
Situation is this:
Our company has AD which is for example company.local. We have external exchange services from ousr ISP, and mail domain is for example truncatedcompany.com. Now let's presume John Smith is employee of the company.
So his AD account would be jsmith@company.local (or company\jsmith) and his email account would be jsmith@truncatedcompany.com.
The problem is, event id 4768 generates from john.smith@fullcompany.com, as in, for some reason the mail account asks for kerberos auth from AD. Return is audit failure with 0x6, since naturally on this scenario there is no such account on AD.
I don't know why I keep getting these, but they are flooding our event logs with these failed (0x6) events. I believe it is probably because the hosted offsite exchange server (we have no access to) is using NTLM, so Outlook tries to communicate with AD when an email is sent. I tried adding the truncatedcompany.com to our AD, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Is there a way to stop these alerts? Should I disable the kerberos that is looking for it? Would that decrease security?
The other issue is the we use the domain\username login convention, and don't plan on changing that. Is there a way to prevent Outlook from trying to interact with the domain? It seems to happen when people are sending/receiving emails.
Switching license from Office 365 Subscription to Product Key
I was using Office 2016 with my Office 365 Business Premium subscription.
I now have an MSDN license and want to use the production license that comes as a benefit, instead of the Office 365 subscription.
I uninstalled Office 365 clients and installed Office 2016 Pro, then provided the product key. Outlook accepted the product key but next time I ran it said I need to reactivate my subscription and it looks like it still thinks the activation method is Office 365. When I go to Office Account menu, it still shows Office 365 Business Premium and then says it has expired. If I choose to provide a product key, it accepts the key but there is no change to the license information.
Do you know how I can switch the license (without reinstalling the OS?!)
Dragged icon to desktop--now application will not open
Hi all. I dragged an icon--Microsoft Office 2013--from its normal place in Start-->All apps-->Microsoft Office 2013 to my desktop. Now I can't open Outlook 2013 at all. Is there any way to resolve this other than reinstalling Office
The first time I tried to open the new desktop shortcut, it resulted in a pop-up window:
Error
OLMAPI32.dll
with only an "OK" button. Clicking OK results in a brief pop up saying, "Outlook 2013 could not start. Looking for solutions." or something to that effect. That disappeared after a few seconds. Then I was asked if
I wanted to run the Office 2013 repair tool (or something with a similar name). I clicked yes and it ran for ~5 minutes, but failed ("Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 configuration did not complete successfully.").
Currently, when I try to open the desktop shortcut, I get a window saying "Outlook couldn't start last time," and asks if I want to start in safe mode. Selecting yes or no gives the same error window.
* There is no OUTLOOK.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15, where it usually resides.
* When I search for Outlook in Windows, the only result is the desktop shortcut.
* A shortcut for Outlook *does* exist in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office 2013, but when I open Start-->All apps-->Microsoft Office 2013, there is no Outlook icon.
* I manually ran the Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 setup, and selected the 'Repair' option. I was met with the same error message, "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 configuration did not complete successfully."
* I have tried rebooting.
* This is the first time I have tried to open Outlook on this computer.
Thanks in advance.
Opening Word documents from SharePoint 2013 with TLS 1.2 enabled
Using office 2016, opening documents from SharePoint 2013 on-prem through a load balancer with TLS 1.2 enabled works. Using Office 2013, it fails with an error while trying to open the document in Word. The highest TLS setting Office 2013 appears to allow is 1.0.
I can also us SharePoint Designer 2013 successfully with TLS 1.2 enabled while accessing SharePoint 2013.
This appears to be an issue with Office 2013 specifically.
If found the following KB that seemed to point to TLS 1.2 support being added to Office 2013:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3085504
However, we're running the latest patches for Office 2013 and still can't open docs via TLS 1.2.
Any ideas on what's going on or how to resolve it?
Migrating to MS Office 2013
ISSUE: Automated migration to MS Office 2013 did not complete successfully.
DISCUSSION: Last week some computers were "pushed" to upgrade to Office 2013 automatically through the network and some did not complete the process. At the office, our only option was to connect remotely to the computer and check its status at the notification area or going to Run Advertised Programs and re-install from there. However, there were some computer that never finished the upgrade, regardless of what we tried. After checking, I discovered that these computer were either behind with security updates (almost 30 days behind) or had updates with a status of "failed;" even if the updates are also pushed over the network. I think that the problematic computers never finalized the upgrade because of discrepancies with security updates.
TENTATIVE PLAN: Do a System Restore to the previous day of the upgrade, get the computer up-to-date, and then run the upgrade through Run Advertised Programs from Control Panel.
QUESTION: A System Restore could be considered a first-choice-quick-fix solutions when facing this type of situation?
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
Outlook 2013 OST to PST conversion
Hi All,
Is there any API that will allow us to convert Outlook 2013's OST to PST format using .Net?
We can convert Outlook 2010 OST to PST but the same process doesn't work in Outlook 2013. Will it work or get corrupted if we replace the header with the old version of the files?
Thanks in advance.
Problem Sending Emails with Office Attachments
We've been rolling out Office 365 2013 and we're probably around 300 total machines now. I've run into a weird problem on three of our 300 or so Office 365 machines. The user sends an email with certain, not all, Office attachments (DOCX or XLSX) and they just sit in the outbox. Sometimes I'll get a message stating that we can't contact the server right now and sometimes I get the 80040115 error that is common.
I can send the very same attachment through microsoftonline just fine. One user was having an issue sending a certain DOCX file, but she could send other DOCX files. Same with another user and his XLSX that wouldn't send - he could send other XLSX files. It's like Outlook is rejecting certain files. I haven't (yet) had a problem with anything other than Office files.
I've tried removing Cache mode, blowing away the OST, flushing DNS; the things I found online to try. It has happened to both people migrated to the cloud and users still on Exchange.
any ideas?

Question about cached exchange mode.
Powerpoint files with charts copied from Excel cannot be saved - says in read only
We have PowerPoint file that have charts that were copied from Excel spreadsheets that are on a network share, and the PowerPoint file opens fine, but when you do File\Save or Save As..., it changes the PowerPoint tile to (Read Only) and no matter where you try to save (even C drive user's documents or desktop) is says make sure you have write access.
I know for a fact it is caused by certain charts in the PowerPoint because we can delete the charts and the file will save. My guess is that somehow in the backend the linked spreadsheets are opening as read only, and then PowerPoint somehow thinks the PowerPoint file is read only, or is trying to save the linked spreadsheet too. We made sure the spreadsheet that it was copied from is not currently opened by anyone, but it is possible the fileserver is returning a false positive as the file being opened already and so PowerPoint opens the linked spreadsheet in read only more, but I do not know a way to verify this.
My only workaround is to force users to delete charts and re-paste as an image, but they would prefer to be able to paste with (keep source formatting) but somehow not be linked back, so they can change chart properties.
This has been an issue for Office 2007, 2010, and 2013, so wondering if Office 2016 fixed the issue.
