Two queries about the 32 bit and 64 bit editions of Office 2013 and how they are installed

I’ve just installed Office 2013 for the first time. After a lot of deliberation, I decided to install it from the backup DVD because I saw some advantages in being able to install with my Internet connection disabled.

As a click-to-run product, I knew that I would not have the ability to select which individual components I wanted to install. But I did assume that I would be offered the choice of installing the 32 bit edition or the 64 bit edition. I was concerned when I wasn’t given that choice.

After the installation had finished, I checked the “About” windows of the individual products and I appear to have the 32 bit edition installed, which is what I wanted.  I have 2 questions however:

  1. I started the installation by accepting the invitation to “Run setup.EXE” from the AutoPlay popup window. I noticed later that the DVD also contains setup32.exe and setup64.exe. If I had wanted the 64 bit edition, would I have had to run setup64.exe instead?
The documentation for how to install Office 2013 from a DVD or a downloaded disk image is practically non-existent. I have not found any statement informing you that setup.exe is “hardwired” to install the 32 bit edition and that, if you want the 64 bit edition, you must run setup64.exe instead. Very poor in my opinion.
  2. I was under the impression that, on a 64 bit version of Windows 7, the “C:\Program Files” folder contains the 64 bit program code and the “C:\Program Files (x86)” folder contains the 32 bit program code.  However, on my system, the “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office” folder contains just one subfolder with 4 very small files. Whereas, the “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15” folder contains a number of subfolders with a large number of files. If I have the 32 bit edition of Office 2013 installed, can anyone explain why nearly all the code appears to be in the 64 bit “C:\Program Files” folder?
