Links to excel files with passwords always prompt! - Word 2010\2013

Try this scenario.

  1. Create a new word and a new excel document
  2. copy cells from excel and paste special them as linked bitmap
  3. save the word and the excel document
  4. go to the word options > advanced, under general uncheckupdate automatic links at open
I know I can change the link to manual but I don't want it as my word file has 50 different links to the excel document. when I need to make an update, I just change the option back again and reopen the document

  5. This is where the problem start!
Open the excel document go to save as > tools > general options. Now add a password to modify the excel document and save it.

  6. Open the word document again and... the excel prompts to enter the passwordeven though the word is set not to update links at open
  • I tested it on Word 2010\2013
  • the file must have password
when only one sheet is protected it doesn't happen, though it is not a solution
  • I tried to paste the excel links as different type. This problem happens only with bitmap and windows metafile.
Other options behave as expected when the password is on.
all the other paste options change the link format so it doesn't help us
  • macros are not an option for a solution

This is not an expected behavior. It is very specific but doesn't make any sense.

Why excel file password triggers the word to update the links?
Why only bitmap and Windows metafile works fine?

Please help! Thanks
